Gum Disease is Easier to Prevent Than to Treat – Gum Disease Health

According to the United States Food and Drug Administration some 75% of adults over the age of 35 have some form of gum disease. In the initial stage of gum disease known as gingivitis, your gums may swell or bleed. But, left untreated this can progress to severe periodontitis which could ultimately lead to tooth loss.

Fortunately, gum disease is highly preventable. In fact, even if you have already begun showing signs, the disease can be halted or reversed if caught soon enough.

Your number one ally in the fight against gum disease is proper oral hygiene. Maintaining a routine of daily dental care such as brushing and flossing will eliminate much of the plaque and bacteria that cause gum disease.

Brush and Floss Regularly

The American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth twice daily. “This removes the film of bacteria from the teeth. Be clear to utilize a soft-bristled toothbrush that is in excellent condition. Toothpastes and mouth rinses containing fluoride strengthen the teeth and help prevent decay.” They go on to say. “Choose products that bear the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance, your assurance that they have met the ADA’s standards for safety and effectiveness.”

It is generally suggested that you floss between your teeth once daily. Consult your dentist if you are unsure of how to do this, as done improperly, flossing can hurt your gums.

Eat a Balance Diet

You should seek to limit eating sugary snacks when you will be unable to clean your teeth for some time. Instead determine a healthy alternative such as fruit. Eating a healthy and balanced diet low in sweets and high in fruits, vegetables and other nutritious foods will increase both your oral and overall health.

Regular Dental Checkups

Seeing your dentist regularly is vital in maintaining proper oral health. Most dentists recommend that you have your teeth cleaned twice yearly. At these routine cleanings your dentist will advise you of any changes in your teeth or gums, oftentimes, spotting these before the situation becomes serious.

Simpler To Prevent Than Treat

It is most vital to remember that gum disease is above all simpler to prevent than to treat. An ounce of hygienic prevention is worth a pound of periodontal cure. Adhering to a daily schedule of brushing and flossing, eating a balanced diet and having your teeth cleaned regularly is essential.

Advanced stage gum disease can cost many thousands of dollars to treat, in addition to leading to the loss of your precious teeth. But, you can maintain that perfect smile by giving your teeth and gums the attention they deserve.
